The Short Answer
Use AI images for backgrounds, moods and fast social content; use 3D renders when the product itself must be exact. AI generators are cheap and quick, but they still bend shapes, garble logos and drift between images. A 3D render comes from an exact model, so every angle and colourway is accurate and repeatable. Most brands end up combining the two.
Where AI Product Images Work
AI image tools are good at settings, light and atmosphere. For lifestyle backgrounds, seasonal campaign variations, moodboards and quick social posts where the product is small in frame, they save real time and money.
They are also useful early on, to explore art directions before paying for final production. Treat the output as a sketch of the idea, not as the product.
Where They Fail
AI struggles with exactness and consistency: product proportions change, text and logos distort, small details appear or vanish, and the same product looks slightly different in every image. On a product page, those differences become returns and complaints.
- Accuracy: buyers compare images with what arrives. An image that flatters the product in ways it cannot deliver costs trust.
- Consistency: a range of twenty products needs matching light, angle and scale. That is hard to hold across AI generations.
- Rules: marketplaces generally require images to represent the item accurately, and some audiences expect disclosure, which we cover in whether customers care about AI content.
How 3D Renders Compare
A 3D render starts from a digital model built to your product's real dimensions and materials. Once the model exists, new angles, colourways and scenes are fast and exact, and the same model can feed your website viewer, AR and animations.
The trade-off is the upfront cost of the model. For one product in one colour, a photo shoot or AI may be cheaper. For ranges, variants and products that do not exist yet, 3D usually wins over a year. Our 3D rendering cost guide has current prices.
The Hybrid That Works
Render the product accurately in 3D, then use AI to help build or extend the scene around it. The product stays exact and consistent, while backgrounds and seasonal variations get cheaper. This keeps the part buyers scrutinise under control and uses AI where its looseness does not matter.
The same logic applies to video, which we compare in AI video generators versus a motion design studio.
How To Decide
Ask three questions: will buyers compare this image with the real product, do I need the same product shown consistently across many images, and will I reuse the product in other formats? If the answer to any of them is yes, start from a 3D model.
Where We Fit
Kalex builds product models in Blender and produces renders, turntables and films for web, marketplaces and ads, and we use AI tools for scenes where they help. See our 3D modelling and rendering service or tell us about your range.
