Realism Fails In Predictable Places

When a client says a render "looks CGI", they are usually reacting to something specific that they cannot name. The good news is that the list of causes is short and each one has a defined fix. This article is written to be useful in both directions: as a diagnostic checklist for clients reviewing work, and as a production checklist for artists.

1. Edges Are Too Sharp

This is the most common single cause. Nothing manufactured has a mathematically perfect edge — injection moulding, machining, and casting all produce a small radius, and that radius catches a thin line of light along every edge of a real object.

A model with zero-radius edges produces no such highlight. The result reads as artificial immediately, even to viewers with no technical knowledge.

Fix: add a small bevel or a rounded-edge shader to every hard edge. It is a small change with a disproportionate effect, and it should be non-negotiable on any product render.

2. Surfaces Are Impossibly Clean

Real objects carry history. Faint fingerprints on glossy plastic, micro-scratches on metal, dust settled on upward-facing surfaces, slight unevenness in a painted finish, subtle variation in colour across a large panel.

A perfectly uniform material with a single roughness value across the entire surface does not exist anywhere in the physical world.

Fix: add subtle variation via roughness maps, a light smudge or fingerprint layer on glossy surfaces, and gentle dust accumulation. The correct amount is one where a viewer would not notice it if you pointed it out — the effect is felt, not seen.

3. The Lighting Is a Preset

Default studio HDRIs are convenient and they look like default studio HDRIs. Real photography involves deliberate decisions — a key light with a specific size and distance, fill that does not fully erase shadow, a rim light separating the subject from the background, and light bouncing off nearby surfaces contaminating colour.

Fix: light the scene as a photographer would. Large soft sources close to the subject for soft shadows; small distant sources for hard ones. Let shadows fall unevenly. Allow a coloured surface just out of frame to tint one side of the product. Asymmetry is what makes light look real.

4. Materials Are Physically Wrong

Materials frequently look wrong because their physical values are wrong rather than because they are badly textured.

  • Metals have no diffuse colour — their appearance comes entirely from what they reflect. A metal in an empty environment looks dead because there is nothing to reflect.
  • Glass and liquids need correct refraction indices and real thickness. Single-plane glass with no thickness never looks right.
  • Skin, wax, marble, and thin plastic transmit light beneath the surface. Without subsurface scattering they look like painted stone.
  • Fabric has directional sheen that changes with viewing angle. A flat diffuse shader reads as paper.
  • Roughness values are commonly set too low. Most real surfaces are rougher than artists assume, and excessive gloss is a persistent tell.

Fix: use measured, physically-based material values as a starting point rather than eyeballing sliders, and always evaluate materials inside a realistic environment rather than against a grey void.

5. There Is No Camera

Render engines produce a mathematically perfect image. Cameras do not. Photographs carry lens character that the eye expects, and its absence is felt as artificiality.

  • Depth of field. Real lenses focus at one distance. Everything in perfect focus is a signature of CGI.
  • Focal length choice. Product photography typically uses 50–100mm. A wide-angle render produces distortion that photographers deliberately avoid, and the viewer registers it as wrong.
  • Slight chromatic aberration and vignetting. Present in every real lens, in small amounts.
  • Grain. A very light noise layer over a perfectly clean render is one of the cheapest and most effective realism additions available.

6. Composition Ignores How Products Are Actually Shot

Even technically excellent renders look artificial when the camera is placed somewhere no photographer would put it — dead-centre, perfectly level, product floating with no relationship to a surface.

Fix: study real product photography for the category and match its conventions. Camera height, angle, distance from the background, and how the product meets its surface all carry learned expectations. Contact shadows in particular — the darker, tighter shadow where an object touches a surface — are frequently missing, and their absence makes products appear to hover.

7. Scale Cues Are Missing or Wrong

Especially in architectural and interior work, the brain judges realism partly by scale consistency. Furniture slightly too large, a doorway slightly too narrow, texture detail scaled wrongly so a wooden floor has grain at the wrong size — all of it registers as uncanny without being identifiable.

Fix: model to real dimensions, always. Check texture scale against real-world measurements. Include familiar objects for reference where appropriate.

8. Interiors Have No Life

An architectural interior with pristine surfaces, perfectly aligned furniture, and no evidence of human presence looks like a showroom rendering, which is exactly what it is.

Fix: introduce controlled imperfection. A cushion slightly out of place, a book left open, a chair not quite parallel to the table, a plant with asymmetric growth. Real rooms have entropy, and its complete absence reads as staged.

9. Post-Production Was Skipped

No photograph you have ever admired came straight out of the camera. Renders need the same finishing.

  • Colour grading toward a deliberate palette rather than accepting raw output
  • Contrast curve adjustment — raw renders are typically flat
  • Subtle bloom on highlights
  • Light vignette to guide the eye
  • Fine grain across the whole frame
  • Local dodge and burn to shape attention

Post typically takes ten to twenty minutes per image and improves perceived quality more than an additional hour of render time.

The Review Checklist

If you are a client evaluating renders, ask these in order:

  1. Do all hard edges show a thin highlight, or are they perfectly sharp?
  2. Is there a contact shadow where the product meets the surface?
  3. Does any surface show micro-variation, or is every material perfectly uniform?
  4. Are shadows asymmetric and soft-edged, or uniform and clean?
  5. Is anything out of focus, or is the entire frame perfectly sharp?
  6. Would a photographer have placed the camera there?
  7. Do the metals reflect an environment, or do they look flat?
  8. Is there any grain, or is the image mathematically clean?

Most unconvincing renders fail four or more of these, and the failures are usually the same four.

The Economics Behind It

Realism is not a technical secret. It is a time budget. The base render — model, materials, lighting, output — is perhaps sixty percent of the work; the remaining forty percent is bevels, imperfection, lighting refinement, and post-production that nobody notices when it is present and everybody notices when it is absent.

One final note: photorealism is not always the goal. Stylised, obviously-illustrated 3D is a legitimate and often stronger choice, because it sidesteps the uncanny valley entirely by not attempting the crossing. The failure mode described in this article is specifically the render that tries to look real and does not quite. Deciding which you want, at the brief stage, prevents most disappointment.
