The Short Answer
3D does not hurt SEO by itself. Google does not penalise WebGL. What hurts is how 3D is often built: a large model that delays the page, text drawn inside the 3D canvas where search engines cannot read it, and heavy scripts that make the page slow to respond. Built with the content in HTML and the 3D loaded after it, a 3D website can rank and pass Core Web Vitals.
What Google Actually Sees
Google renders JavaScript, so it sees the finished page, but a 3D canvas is a picture to it. Words, prices and product names inside the scene are invisible. The same is true for AI assistants that read pages to answer questions.
The rule is simple: every piece of information that matters must exist as real text in the page. The 3D illustrates it; the HTML says it.
How 3D Affects Core Web Vitals
Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint, good under 2.5 seconds), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint, good under 200 milliseconds) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift, good under 0.1). 3D can affect all three.
| Metric | How 3D can hurt it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | Large scripts and models load before the headline and hero image | Load real content first, start the 3D after it |
| INP | Model parsing and shader compiling block the main thread | Compressed models, workers, defer setup until idle |
| CLS | The canvas appears late and pushes content down | Reserve the space with a still image of the same size |
INP is the one most often missed, and our INP guide explains why it matters for rankings.
The Build Rules That Keep 3D Fast
- A poster first. Show a compressed still of the scene immediately, then swap in the live 3D.
- Load the 3D late. Start it after the main content, when the browser is idle, or when the section scrolls into view.
- Compress everything. Draco or Meshopt for geometry, KTX2 for textures. A product model should usually land between 1 and 5 MB.
- Simplify on phones. Lower resolution, fewer lights and simpler materials on small screens.
- Fail gracefully. If WebGL is unavailable, the still image and the text still tell the whole story.
Our GLB optimisation guide covers the compression side in detail.
Where 3D Can Help SEO
3D can help indirectly. A product page where visitors spin the model tends to hold attention longer, and a memorable site earns links and mentions that ordinary pages do not. Neither is a ranking trick; both are what happens when the 3D is genuinely useful.
A Quick Audit for an Existing 3D Site
Turn JavaScript off and read the page: if the main message disappears, it is trapped in the canvas. Run PageSpeed Insights on a phone profile and look at LCP and INP. Check the size of the GLB files in the network panel. Most 3D sites that rank badly fail one of these three checks.
Working With Kalex
Kalex builds 3D websites that keep their content in HTML and load the 3D after it, so they can rank. See our 3D website service or read how a 3D website gets built.
