The Short Answer
A brand identity project usually runs through six steps: discovery, positioning, concept directions, refinement, the full visual system, and guidelines with handover. A focused project for a small business or startup takes four to eight weeks; larger projects with research and many stakeholders take three to four months. Each step should end with something you can see and approve.
Step 1: Discovery
Discovery is where the studio learns the business: goals, audience, competitors, what the current brand gets right and wrong, and where the identity will be used. Expect a questionnaire, a workshop or interviews, and a review of existing materials.
You receive: a short summary of what was learned and what the identity must achieve.
Step 2: Positioning
Positioning turns discovery into a clear point of view: who the brand is for, what makes it different, and how it should feel. This step is what keeps the design from becoming a matter of taste.
You receive: a positioning statement, brand attributes and often a moodboard or two. If every brand in your market sounds the same, this is where that is fixed; see why brands look generic.
Step 3: Concept Directions
The studio presents two or three distinct creative directions, each with a logo idea, type, colour and a few example applications. Seeing them applied matters more than seeing logos alone.
You receive: a presentation of each direction and the reasoning behind it.
Step 4: Refinement
One direction is chosen and refined over one or two rounds: the logo is perfected, type and colour are finalised, and variations are drawn for different sizes and uses.
You receive: the final logo system and core palette, approved.
Step 5: The Full Visual System
The system is what makes the identity work everywhere: supporting graphics, imagery direction, layouts, iconography, motion principles and designed applications such as website sections, social templates, packaging or stationery.
You receive: the designed applications agreed in the scope. This is where most of the work in a good identity sits, and why prices vary so much, as our brand identity pricing guide explains.
Step 6: Guidelines and Handover
Guidelines explain how to use the identity without the studio in the room: logo usage, spacing, colour values, type hierarchy, imagery rules and examples. Handover includes every file your team and suppliers will need.
You receive: guidelines, logo files in all formats, colour values, font details and editable source files. If your brand already looks different across channels, brand guidelines that actually get used covers how to fix it.
What Makes Projects Run Late
The usual causes are too many decision makers, feedback that arrives late or contradicts earlier approvals, and scope that grows mid-project. Agree who signs off each step before the project starts, and keep a single consolidated feedback channel.
