The Short Answer
A brand identity audit collects every place your brand appears, scores each one for consistency and distinctiveness, tests whether customers recognise you without your name, and checks legal and technical basics. It takes about a week for a small or mid-sized business and ends with one decision: enforce, refresh, evolve or rebrand.
Day 1 and 2: Collect Every Touchpoint
Gather every place the brand appears, usually 20 to 60 items for a small or mid-sized business. Include what customers see and what staff and partners use. Lay them out together, physically or on one digital board, because inconsistency is only obvious when items sit side by side.
- Digital: website, app, social profiles, marketplace listings, email templates, ads, favicon.
- Print: packaging, labels, business cards, brochures, invoices, letterheads.
- Physical: signage, vehicles, uniforms, shop interiors, merchandise.
- Internal and partner: sales decks, proposals, distributor materials, recruitment posts.
- Source files: the logo files, fonts and guidelines people actually use.
Day 3: Score Each Touchpoint
Score each touchpoint from 1 to 5 on five criteria: correct logo use, colour accuracy, typography, imagery and tone of voice. Add the scores to see where the brand drifts most. Averages below 3 point to a system problem rather than a few careless mistakes.
| Criterion | Score 1 | Score 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Logo | Stretched, outdated or wrong version | Correct version, size and clear space |
| Colour | Off-brand or inconsistent shades | Exact brand values |
| Typography | Default or random fonts | Brand typefaces and hierarchy |
| Imagery | Mixed stock styles | Consistent, on-brand style |
| Voice | Generic or contradictory | Recognisably your tone |
If drift is the main problem, guidelines and templates fix most of it; see why brands look different everywhere.
Day 4: Test Distinctiveness
Consistency is not enough if the consistent thing looks like everyone else. Compare your materials with three to five competitors with names removed, then run a recognition test with 20 to 50 customers. Ask which brand each asset belongs to. Assets most people link to you are worth protecting; those linked to competitors are not.
- Competitor lineup: websites, packs and social posts side by side, names hidden.
- Recognition test: your colour, logo symbol, pack shape and key visuals shown without the name.
- Score fame and uniqueness for each asset, as described in distinctive brand assets.
Day 5: Check Legal and Technical Basics
An identity can look fine and still be fragile. Check that your marks are registered in the right classes and markets, that fonts are properly licensed, that vector master files exist, and that the website and digital assets meet accessibility basics. These checks are quick, and gaps here are the costly ones to discover late.
- Trademark registrations for the name and logo in each market and class.
- Font licences for desktop, web, app and logo use; see font licensing.
- Vector master files and a complete logo file set; see what files a logo needs.
- Colour contrast of at least 4.5:1 for text on the website.
- Packaging compliance where relevant; in India, see FSSAI and Legal Metrology labelling.
Day 6 and 7: Decide What To Do
Bring the scores together and choose one of four paths. Most audits end in a refresh or evolution, not a rebrand. Rebrand only when the core assets fail on distinctiveness or no longer fit where the business is going, and even then keep whatever customers already recognise.
| Finding | Decision |
|---|---|
| Distinctive and consistent | Enforce: update guidelines and templates |
| Distinctive but inconsistent | Refresh: fix drift, rebuild files and templates |
| Some strong assets, dated or limited system | Evolve: redraw and extend while keeping core assets |
| Generic, conflicting or misaligned with strategy | Rebrand, keeping anything customers recognise |
