The Short Answer
AI image generators output raster images of around 1024 pixels square, which print sharply only up to about 8.7 cm wide at 300 pixels per inch. Signs, packaging and embroidery need vector files built from clean paths. Auto-tracing an AI image rarely works well, so a usable logo usually has to be redrawn.
Raster vs Vector, in One Minute
A raster image is a grid of pixels; enlarge it and the pixels show. A vector file stores shapes as mathematical paths; it scales to a business card or a 40-foot hoarding with no loss. Logos must be vector because they are used at every size, and printers, sign makers and embroiderers work from paths.
| Raster (PNG, JPG, WebP) | Vector (SVG, AI, EPS, PDF) | |
|---|---|---|
| Made of | Pixels | Paths and shapes |
| Scaling | Blurs when enlarged | Sharp at any size |
| Editing colours | Difficult and imprecise | Exact, per shape |
| Used for | Photos, social posts, screens | Logos, signage, print, embroidery, cutting |
| What AI generators output | Yes | Rarely, and usually not cleanly |
The Five Ways AI Logos Fail in Production
AI logos usually fail in five predictable places: resolution, text, colour, detail and consistency. Each one is invisible on a phone screen and obvious the moment the logo goes to a printer, a sign maker or a packaging supplier. Knowing them in advance saves a reprint.
- Resolution. At 1024 pixels, the file is sharp up to about 3.4 inches. A 6-foot shop sign needs roughly twenty times that resolution, or a vector file.
- Text. Letters are generated as shapes, not typed, so they are often misspelled, uneven or impossible to match with a real font.
- Colour. Generated colours are screen RGB with soft gradients and noise. Printing needs defined CMYK or Pantone values, and gradients often band or muddy.
- Detail. Fine textures, glows and shadows disappear at small sizes and cannot be embroidered, engraved or cut from vinyl.
- Consistency. There is one image, not a system. Asking the generator for a horizontal version or an icon produces a different logo.
Why Auto-Trace Rarely Fixes It
Auto-trace tools convert pixels to paths by guessing where edges are. On a clean, flat image they can work. On a typical AI logo, with soft edges, gradients, uneven curves and generated text, they produce hundreds of jagged anchor points, wobbly lines and broken letters that look worse when enlarged.
What a good vector logo has that a trace does not:
- Smooth curves with few, well-placed anchor points.
- Consistent stroke widths and deliberate geometry.
- Real typography, set from a licensed font or drawn custom.
- Flat, defined colours that can be specified to a printer.
- Simplified versions that survive at 16 pixels and in one colour.
The Files a Usable Logo Needs
A logo is a set of files, not one image. A complete set covers every format, colour version and size your business will need, so suppliers never have to improvise. If your AI logo is a single PNG, everything below is missing.
| File or version | Used for |
|---|---|
| Vector masters (AI, EPS, PDF) | Printers, sign makers, packaging suppliers |
| SVG | Websites and apps, sharp on every screen |
| Transparent PNGs at several sizes | Documents, presentations, social media |
| Full colour, one colour, black, white, reversed | Different backgrounds and printing methods |
| Horizontal, stacked and icon-only lockups | Wide headers, square avatars, small spaces |
| Favicon and app icon versions | Browser tabs, home screens, marketplace stores |
| Colour values in CMYK, RGB, HEX and Pantone | Matching colour across print and screen |
| Font names and licences | Consistent typography everywhere; see font licensing |
Redraw or Start Again?
If the AI logo contains a strong, distinctive idea and does not resemble an existing trademark, have a designer redraw it as original vector artwork and build the system around it. If it is generic or resembles other marks, redrawing only produces a cleaner version of the same problem, and starting again is cheaper in the long run.
Redrawing also strengthens your legal position, because a substantial human contribution can attract copyright where pure AI output may not; see can you copyright an AI logo.
