The Short Answer

3D product pages can increase sales, but only for products buyers want to inspect, and only when the 3D loads fast. Shopify has reported much higher conversion on products with 3D content, though that figure comes from merchants who chose to add it, so it overstates the typical effect. The safest approach is a normal, fast store with 3D added to the products where buyers hesitate.

What the Evidence Says

The most quoted figure comes from Shopify, which reported in 2020 that products with 3D content converted dramatically better than those without. It is a real signal, but it compares merchants who invested in 3D with those who did not, and those merchants likely differed in other ways too.

What is consistent across retailers is the mechanism: 3D and AR help when the buyer's doubt is visual. Will it fit in the room, what does the back look like, how big is it really. When the doubt is about price, fit on the body or delivery, 3D does little.

The Four Levels of 3D Ecommerce

LevelWhat it isEffortWhen it pays
1. 3D viewerOne model the buyer can rotate and zoomLowMost physical products worth inspecting
2. AR viewPlace the product in the room through the phone cameraLow once the model existsFurniture, decor, lighting, appliances
3. ConfiguratorChange colours, materials and parts liveHighHigh-ticket, made-to-order products
4. Full 3D storeThe whole shopping experience as a 3D worldVery highCampaigns, rarely everyday selling

Levels one and two come from the same model, so a well-made model pays twice. Level three is covered in our configurator cost guide.

Which Products Gain the Most

  • Strong fit: furniture, lighting, footwear, watches, jewellery, bags, electronics, kitchen appliances, anything customised.
  • Moderate fit: beauty packaging, homeware, sports equipment, toys.
  • Weak fit: basic clothing, consumables, low-priced impulse items.

How to Test It Before You Commit

Pick one best-selling product with a high price and frequent questions. Commission one accurate, web-optimised model, add the viewer and AR to that product page, and compare add-to-cart and return rates against the same period without it. If it moves, extend to the next ten products; if it does not, you have spent the price of one model.

Do Not Let 3D Slow the Store

A 3D viewer that delays the product page costs more sales than it earns. Load the product photo first and the 3D on demand, keep each model small, and leave category pages free of 3D. We explain the setup in adding a 3D product viewer, and the model side in what a 3D product model costs.
