The short answer

A jewellery website sells when it replaces the reassurance of a showroom: verifiable purity through BIS hallmark and HUID, recognised certificates for diamonds, a transparent price breakup, close-up photography or 3D, clear exchange and buyback terms, and insured shipping. Design matters, but proof decides whether a buyer spends ₹50,000 online.

Jewellery is one of the hardest categories to sell online in India precisely because trust is traditionally built in person, often over generations with one family jeweller. The websites that work treat every page as an answer to one question: how does the buyer know this is real?

Trust signals a jewellery website must show

Indian jewellery buyers look for four proofs before paying online: BIS hallmarking with a verifiable HUID for gold, certificates from recognised labs for diamonds and gemstones, a clear price breakup, and written exchange, buyback, and return terms. Missing any one of these sends the buyer back to Instagram DMs or a physical store.

  • Hallmark and HUID. Since 1 April 2023, gold jewellery sold where hallmarking is mandatory must carry a six-digit HUID, and HUID-based hallmarking was introduced for silver from 1 September 2025. Buyers can verify an HUID in the BIS CARE app, so tell them how, and print it on the invoice.
  • Diamond and gemstone certificates. Name the lab, show the certificate number, and link a sample certificate. State plainly whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown on the product page, not only in the description.
  • Exchange and buyback. Lifetime exchange and buyback percentages are a major reason buyers choose a jeweller. Publish the actual terms, including deductions, rather than the word "lifetime" alone.
  • Shipping and returns. Insured, tamper-evident shipping and an honest return window for non-customised pieces reduce the perceived risk of the first order more than any discount.

How to show jewellery prices online: the price breakup

Show the price breakup on every product page: metal weight, purity, the gold rate used and its date, making charges, stone value, and 3 percent GST. Indian buyers are used to this breakup in-store, and a single final number without it reads as hidden making charges, which is the most common source of distrust.

For brands pricing from live metal rates, the site needs to recalculate prices on a schedule and show when the rate was last updated. On Shopify this is usually handled by a gold-rate pricing app; on a custom build it is a scheduled job against your own rate feed. Either way, cache sensibly: a product page that waits on a rate lookup before loading loses more sales than a rate that is a few hours old.

Jewellery photography, video, and 3D

Jewellery product pages need macro photography that shows finish and stone setting, on-body images for scale, and short video showing how light moves across the piece. For configurable designs such as engagement rings, 3D views let buyers change metal and stone without you photographing every combination.

Scale is the detail most sites miss. A pendant photographed alone on white could be 12 millimetres or 40. Always include an on-ear, on-hand, or on-neck image, and state the dimensions in millimetres. For brands with many variants, 3D rendering is often cheaper than repeat shoots; our comparison of 3D visualisation versus product photography covers where each wins, and why some renders look fake covers the metal and gemstone materials that most often give a render away.

Shopify or a custom website for a jewellery brand?

Shopify is the right starting point for most jewellery brands selling fixed-price or lightly variable designs. A custom build earns its cost when prices must recalculate from live metal rates across hundreds of variants, when you need a ring builder or 3D configurator, or when a luxury brand experience is itself part of what the customer is paying for.

Shopify in India carries a third-party transaction fee on online payments because Shopify Payments is not available here, which matters more in a high-ticket category. Our Shopify pricing guide in rupees shows when that fee justifies a higher plan, and the broader trade-offs are in Shopify vs WooCommerce for India.

WhatsApp, video calls, and the high-ticket sale

Above a certain price, most jewellery buyers want to talk to someone before paying. The best-performing jewellery websites make that easy with a WhatsApp button on every product, bookable video-call consultations to see pieces live, and an appointment option for the store, then track which enquiries turn into orders.

Treat the website as the start of the conversation rather than a checkout that must close alone. A buyer who books a video call after seeing a bridal set online is a website conversion, even if payment happens in the showroom. Our guide to WhatsApp Business automation covers routing and follow-up so those enquiries do not go cold.

How buyers find jewellers on Google and AI assistants

Jewellery buyers increasingly ask Google and AI assistants questions like "best place to buy lab-grown diamond rings online in India" or "is this jeweller trustworthy". The assistants then search for reviews, certifications, and comparisons, so sites with clear policies, category pages built around real needs, and genuine third-party reviews get recommended.

Build category pages around how people shop, such as daily-wear gold earrings, lightweight bridal sets, or men's platinum bands, each with a short, specific introduction. Keep your business details consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, and marketplaces, and encourage reviews on platforms buyers trust. Our explanation of what ChatGPT actually searches when a customer asks it a question shows why "reviews" and "certified" pages matter so much.

What a jewellery website costs in India

A well-built Shopify jewellery store with a customised theme and strong product templates typically costs ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh. A custom site with live gold-rate pricing, a configurator, or 3D views usually costs ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh or more. Product photography or 3D rendering is often the largest line on the budget.

Spend in the order buyers need proof: product imagery and trust content first, pricing transparency second, visual polish third. If you would like a jeweller-specific plan, including 3D for configurable pieces, talk to us or see our 3D product rendering work.
