The short answer
Shopify in India costs ₹1,499 to ₹22,680 a month on yearly billing for the Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans, or ₹1,994 to ₹30,164 billed monthly, with Plus from ₹1,75,000. The cost most Indian merchants miss is the third-party transaction fee of 0.6 to 2 percent on online payments, charged because Shopify Payments is unavailable in India.

Shopify plans and prices in India
Shopify India offers four main plans: Basic at ₹1,499 a month billed yearly, Grow at ₹5,599, Advanced at ₹22,680, and Plus from ₹1,75,000. Monthly billing costs roughly a third more. Higher plans reduce the third-party transaction fee and add staff accounts and reporting.
| Plan | Billed yearly (per month) | Billed monthly | Third-party transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ₹1,499 | ₹1,994 | 2% |
| Grow | ₹5,599 | ₹7,447 | 1% |
| Advanced | ₹22,680 | ₹30,164 | 0.6% |
| Plus | From ₹1,75,000 | Term contract | 0.2% |
Grow includes up to five staff accounts and Advanced up to fifteen. At the time of writing, new stores could try Shopify for three days free and then pay ₹20 a month for the first three months on Basic, Grow, or Advanced.
The third-party transaction fee Indian stores pay
Because Shopify Payments is not available in India, every Indian store takes online payments through a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, PayU, or Cashfree, and Shopify charges an extra transaction fee on those payments: 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, 0.6 percent on Advanced. This is on top of the gateway's own fee.
Three details make a real difference to the bill. The fee applies to online payments only; manual methods such as cash on delivery and bank transfer are not charged. The fee is not returned when you refund an order, so high return rates raise your effective cost. And international card payments usually carry higher gateway charges than domestic ones, so the combined cost on an overseas order can reach four to five percent.
Other Shopify costs: themes, apps, domain, and GST
Beyond the plan and fees, budget for a theme, apps, a domain, and GST. Premium themes are a one-time purchase typically costing ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 at current exchange rates, most stores run several paid apps billed monthly, a domain costs around ₹1,000 a year, and GST applies to subscriptions and apps billed to Indian businesses.
- Theme. Free themes are capable. Premium themes add layouts and features; a custom theme is a design and development project rather than a purchase.
- Apps. Reviews, COD verification, WhatsApp notifications, shipping, and subscriptions are commonly apps. Many are priced in US dollars, so costs move with the exchange rate. A typical small store spends a few thousand rupees a month on them.
- Payment gateway. Domestic gateway fees are typically around two percent, higher for international cards and some methods.
- GST. Expect 18 percent GST on Shopify subscriptions and app charges.
Worked example: what a small Indian store really pays
A store selling ₹3 lakh a month with 60 percent of orders prepaid online pays about ₹12,700 a month on Shopify Basic billed yearly before GST: ₹1,499 plan, ₹3,600 Shopify transaction fee, roughly ₹3,600 gateway fee on ₹1.8 lakh of online payments, and about ₹4,000 in apps.
That is around 4.2 percent of revenue, and the plan price is the smallest part of it. The transaction and gateway fees together are more than four times the subscription. This is why moving customers from COD to prepaid, while generally good for reducing undelivered orders, also increases Shopify's fee, and why the upgrade calculation below matters.
When upgrading from Basic to Grow pays for itself
On yearly billing, Grow costs ₹4,100 a month more than Basic and cuts the transaction fee by 1 percentage point, so it pays for itself once your online, non-COD sales pass about ₹4.1 lakh a month. On monthly billing the gap is ₹5,453, putting break-even near ₹5.45 lakh a month.
The same maths for Grow to Advanced: the yearly-billed difference is ₹17,081 a month for a 0.4 percentage point saving, so Advanced pays for itself on fees alone above roughly ₹42.7 lakh a month in online payments. Below those levels, upgrade only if you need the staff accounts, reporting, or other features. Remember to count only prepaid online sales, since COD orders carry no transaction fee.
Is Shopify worth it in India?
For most new and growing Indian D2C brands, yes: Shopify's reliability, checkout, and app ecosystem save more in development and maintenance than its fees cost. It becomes worth questioning at high online sales volumes, where the percentage fee grows large, or when your requirements are unusual enough that you are fighting the platform.
