The short answer
Most Indian clothing brands should launch on Shopify with a customised theme, then invest in what reduces returns and builds trust: detailed garment measurements, fit notes, on-model video, clear exchange terms, and COD controls. A striking design helps the brand, but in apparel the product page and returns policy decide whether the business is profitable.
Fashion has the highest return rates in Indian e-commerce, commonly estimated at 25 to 35 percent, and size and fit cause roughly half of apparel returns. That makes the website a margin tool as much as a storefront.
Shopify or a custom website for a clothing brand?
Shopify is the right platform for most clothing brands in India because it handles size and colour variants, inventory, discounts, and checkout reliably, and integrates with Indian gateways, COD verification, and shipping aggregators. A custom or headless build makes sense later, when the brand experience, traffic, or catalogue complexity outgrows what themes can do well.
Two India-specific costs to plan for. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2, 1, or 0.6 percent on online payments depending on your plan, on top of gateway charges; COD orders do not attract it. Our Shopify pricing guide for India calculates when upgrading pays for itself. And apps add up quickly, so choose them deliberately rather than installing one per problem.
Product page details that reduce size-related returns
To cut size-related returns, publish actual garment measurements for each size in inches and centimetres, show the model's height and the size they wear, describe the fit and fabric stretch, and surface size feedback from reviews. Generic S-M-L body charts are the single biggest avoidable cause of apparel returns.
- Garment measurements, not body charts. Chest, length, shoulder, and sleeve for each size, measured on the actual garment. A "size M fits chest 38–40" chart says nothing about an oversized cut.
- Model details. "Model is 5 feet 10 inches and wears M" answers the question most buyers are actually asking.
- Fit and fabric. Relaxed, regular, or slim; fabric composition; weight or GSM for tees and knits; stretch or no stretch; and whether it shrinks after washing.
- Movement. A five-second on-model video shows drape and fall better than six photographs.
- Size feedback. Reviews that record "runs small" or "true to size" do more to prevent a wrong order than any chart.
These details are also exactly the attributes that Google Shopping, marketplaces, and AI shopping assistants filter on, so writing them properly pays twice.
COD, RTO, and exchange-first policies
Cash on delivery is expected by many Indian shoppers trying a new brand, but COD orders are refused or undelivered far more often than prepaid ones. Keep COD, confirm COD orders by WhatsApp before dispatch, verify addresses, reward prepaid orders, and offer exchanges before refunds to keep revenue inside the business.
Return-to-origin losses are the hidden killer: two-way shipping, packaging, and stock held in transit for an order that never generated revenue. An automated WhatsApp confirmation for COD orders is inexpensive and catches a large share of impulse or fake orders before they ship. Our guide to automating the D2C journey from ad click to sale covers how to set it up, and why customers abandon checkout covers the other side of the funnel.
Brand-led design without a slow site
A clothing brand's website should feel like the brand, but lookbooks, full-screen imagery, and autoplay video routinely make fashion sites slow on mobile data. Use modern image formats and responsive sizes, avoid autoplaying heavy video on phones, keep shopping paths one tap away from editorial content, and test on a mid-range Android phone.
The balance that works is editorial on the homepage and collection openers, and ruthless clarity on product and cart pages. Buyers arrive from Instagram and ads straight onto product pages far more often than onto the homepage, so that is where speed and clarity matter most. Our Shopify store design guide goes deeper on layout.
How shoppers discover clothing brands in 2026
Clothing shoppers now discover brands through Instagram and YouTube, Google Shopping, marketplaces, and increasingly AI assistants answering prompts like "linen shirts under ₹2,000 for men in India". Each of these draws on structured product data, so accurate titles, attributes, prices, and availability in your store feed determine whether you appear at all.
AI assistants that search on a shopper's behalf add words like "best", "reviews", and the current year to their searches, then favour pages and brands that appear consistently across reviews, listings, and your own site. Our explanation of how AI assistants rewrite a shopper's question into searches and our piece on social search and product discovery cover both channels.
What a clothing brand website costs in India
A customised Shopify theme with properly built product templates typically costs ₹60,000 to ₹2 lakh, a fully custom Shopify theme ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh, and a headless build from around ₹8 lakh. Add monthly Shopify plan and app costs, photography, and the transaction and gateway fees on online payments.
For a new label, the best return usually comes from a solid theme, excellent product imagery, and the product-page details above, rather than a bespoke design before product-market fit.
