The finding, with the correction attached
Roughly 41% of Gen Z now search social platforms before Google. But among that same group, 67% use Instagram for search, 62% use TikTok and 61% use Google — three platforms at near parity. The story is fragmentation of where discovery starts, not the death of search.
This correction matters because the strategic response to "young people have left Google" is very different from the response to "young people now start in three places instead of one". The first says redirect the budget. The second says your buyers now encounter you across several surfaces and your job is to be findable and consistent on all of them.
The part most coverage leaves out
There is a widely repeated statistic that a majority of Gen Z prefer TikTok to Google for search. It was true when measured, and it has since moderated significantly — one 2026 analysis put the decline in that preference at around half.
Two reasons this is worth knowing. First, anyone rebuilding a discovery strategy on the steepest 2023 trajectory is planning against a curve that flattened. Second, it demonstrates the pattern these shifts follow: a genuine behaviour change gets extrapolated into a replacement narrative, then settles into an addition. Social search is now a permanent, established part of discovery. It is not replacing search, and the businesses that acted as though it would have over-rotated.
The reliable version: discovery fragmented, Google's share of the first step fell, and its share of the last step largely held.
What actually gets searched where
Platform choice tracks the type of decision far better than it tracks age.
Instagram and TikTok win visually driven and emotionally charged searches — food, fashion, interiors, travel, fitness, anything where the question is really "what will this be like". Around 77% of Gen Z use TikTok to find products, and these searches sit at the top and middle of the funnel where inspiration matters more than specification.
Reddit wins considered decisions where the user wants an unfiltered opinion from someone with no incentive. Almost half of Gen Z adults use it, and its influence is amplified because AI assistants lean on it heavily when answering subjective questions.
Google wins verification and completion. It is frequently the final step even when the inspiration came from elsewhere — the branded search that checks whether you are a real company before someone spends money.
So the practical question is not which platform to be on. It is which stage of your buyer's decision is weakest, and which surface serves that stage.
The verification search is where money is won and lost
The most commercially important consequence of social discovery is the least discussed. When someone finds you on Instagram or sees you recommended in a Reddit thread, their next move is overwhelmingly to search your brand name.
That search lands on your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and whatever else ranks for your name. It is the moment the interest generated elsewhere either converts into trust or evaporates. And it is almost entirely uninstrumented in most businesses, because branded search gets dismissed as traffic that would have arrived anyway.
It would not have. It arrived because something on another platform sent it, and what it finds determines the outcome. A social-first discovery strategy paired with a weak, out-of-date website is a machine for generating interest and then losing it — which is why the site work matters more as social discovery grows, not less.
What being findable on social search actually requires
Social search is keyword-driven in ways that surprise people who think of these platforms purely visually.
Say the words. On-screen text, spoken words in video, captions, and alt text are all indexed. A beautifully shot post that never states what the product is, who it is for, or where you operate is invisible to search on the same platform that hosts it.
Answer questions, not just showcase work. The queries people run on social are questions — how much does this cost, is it worth it, what should I look for. Content that answers those directly gets surfaced by search long after the feed has moved on, which is where the compounding value sits.
Be locatable. Location in the profile, the caption, and the tags. A large share of social search has local intent, and it fails silently when the location exists only in your bio.
On Reddit, participate rather than market. Reddit is unusually good at detecting and punishing promotion. The return comes from being a genuinely useful presence in communities relevant to your work, over a long period. It is slow, it does not scale, and it is one of the few remaining channels where that is the point.
Where AI search fits into this
These two shifts are usually discussed separately and are the same underlying change: discovery moving away from a single ranked list of links.
They also compound. Assistants draw on Reddit threads, social content, and reviews when generating answers, so a strong presence in social discussion feeds directly into what AI systems say about you. A brand that people genuinely discuss on Reddit gets recommended by assistants that read Reddit. The same content is doing two jobs.
The measurement approach for the AI half is in finding out whether ChatGPT recommends your brand, and the traffic side in what to do when AI Overviews take your traffic.
What to actually change
For most businesses the sensible response is smaller than the trend coverage implies.
Do not move your budget out of search into social on the strength of the headline statistic. Google still closes.
Do make your existing social content searchable — real words describing what you do, questions answered directly, locations stated. This is editing what you already publish, not a new channel.
Do audit what someone finds when they search your brand name, because that is where social discovery cashes out. If the answer is a slow website with three-year-old work on it, fix that before anything else.
Do pick one platform and be genuinely good at it. Presence on five is worse than depth on the one where your buyers actually decide. Tell us where your enquiries currently come from and we will tell you which one that is.
